History

While a student at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, H. C. Taylor walked into the office of the yearbook staff and asked if anybody needed a hand. The year was 1914, and the rest, they say, is Taylor Publishing Company’s history.

In 1923, the Taylor brothers bought Star Engraving in Houston, Texas. After introducing offset lithography to yearbook printing in 1939, Taylor Engraving (formerly Star Engraving) reorganized in Dallas, Texas.

The brothers then developed the Taylor Plan. It consisted of creating a kit of easy-to-use tools for yearbook staffs and handling all steps of yearbook typesetting, printing, binding and cover production under one roof.

The focal point of Taylor’s long-standing tradition of service and commitment to technology, this simple plan propelled Taylor onto a path of innovation and leadership in yearbook publishing.

Within a few years, Taylor acquired Newsfoto Publishing Company in San Angelo, Texas, purchased a 13-acre tract of land in Dallas for a new facility and merged with the Insilco Corporation.

By the mid-1970’s, Taylor was forging the way into the digital publishing arena. In 1975, Taylor paginated virtually 100 percent of its yearbook material with its then-revolutionary Cybercomp computerized copy-preparation system. In 1983, Taylor released the industry’s first yearbook-specific software to aid students and advisers—TypeVision, a line of software that remains a publishing solution for thousands of yearbook staffs to this day.

With the production of the nation’s first yearbook using Adobe’s then-new PageMaker desktop publishing software, 1987 marked a pivotal year for Taylor’s foray into digital technology. Taylor soon introduced Automatic Picture Processing, a system allowing electronically scanned and enhanced photographs to be positioned onto 100-percent digital pages.

Today, Taylor remains on the forefront of both technology and personalized service. Digital proofs, on-line page submission and proofing, multimedia journalism curriculums – only Taylor delivers a complete yearbook experience designed to help you and your staff make the most of your memories. It’s a comprehensive program that brings people, technology and experience together – and year after year, the results speak for themselves.

Taylor does more than make yearbooks. We make them easy. We make them educational. We make them unique. And most importantly, we make them fun.
